Balance - it really is the key to life. This is something the creator of 'The Balanced Base' Lauren Smith knows better than anyone else.
Lauren spent many years working in live television sports broadcasting. Demanding hours and weekly travel interstate to broadcast some of Australia's biggest sporting events took a toll on her stress levels and overall well being, and she faced a major health challenge in 2010.
As part of her recovery from brain surgery for a neurological condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia, Lauren trained as a Pilates instructor, and after balancing teaching and television for 5 years, she made the transition into the wellness industry.
In a desire to optimise her own mental and physical health and encourage others to do the same, Lauren started working in retreat centres and detox facilities in both Thailand and Sri Lanka, where she learnt a variety of new modalities and healing techniques and supported hundreds of people from all over the world to start their own healing and well-being journeys.
Lauren witnessed first-hand the change in both herself and in others when empowered to take control of their health and create balance in a supportive setting. Inspired, she returned home to Hawthorn with a mission: to create a space where people can make balance a part of their life every day.

Over the last year I had been conscious of how much worse my posture seemed to have gotten. I knew given my office job and heavy Muay Thai training I needed to be proactive about addressing the structural and muscular imbalances I had.
My posture assessment with Lauren was exactly what I was looking for to get me started. Lauren was very thorough and professional. We started with a conversation about my athletic history and all the injuries sustained over that period, followed by a visual examination of the way I stand and move, plus a hands-on assessment of my spine.
Based on that, Lauren identified where I had structural imbalances, limited range of motion and weak muscular engagement, providing me with lots of explanations, visuals and answered all of my questions. She wanted to make sure I understood where I was on the spectrum of healthy posture and mobility, how i'd gotten there and how I could start to move in the right direction.
Lauren then provided me with a variety of exercises, she demonstrated them and had me do them if front of her so she could ensure I was recruiting the correct muscles to perform the exercises. She then followed up with an email full of information and exercises to reinforce and supplement what we had covered during the assessment.
Lauren is knowledgable and passionate about her work, and it shows! She's also a wonderful and easy going individual, and puts you right at ease. I am really glad I took advantage of the opportunity to get a posture assessment done with her, I would highly recommend it.

I attended a Wellness retreat in early 2019 where Lauren was my facilitator. I had an incredibly tough year and was feeling lost and unsure about everything. Through one to one chats and a number of activities guided by Lauren she helped me rediscover what makes me, ME!
She went above and beyond to organise activities that she knew would help me reconnect with myself and the things I am passionate about. She is incredibly insightful and is gifted at being able to get to the heart of a person. Her empathy and compassion was the salve that my soul was needing and I will be forever grateful for her open heart and kindness.
She has followed up with me a number of times since the retreat to check in and to give positive reinforcement for the changes I've made in my life. If only we lived in the same country, I would be going back to her regularly.
